Family-Friendly Things to Do in Kanazawa: A Guide for Parents Visiting Japan in 2026

Travelling with children can be one of the most rewarding ways to experience Japan, but it also comes with its own challenges. Fortunately, Kanazawa is one of the most family-friendly destinations in the country. With spacious parks, fascinating cultural attractions, delicious food, and a slower pace than larger cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, it offers plenty to keep both children and parents entertained.

Having explored Kanazawa extensively with my own family, I've put together some of my favourite family-friendly activities for visitors.

Kenrokuen Autumn

  1. Explore Kenrokuen Garden

Kenrokuen is considered one of Japan's three most beautiful gardens, but it's also surprisingly enjoyable for children. Wide paths, ponds filled with koi fish, historic bridges, and plenty of open space make it an easy place to explore as a family.

Children especially enjoy spotting turtles and fish in the ponds, while parents can appreciate the beautiful seasonal scenery. Every season offers something different, from cherry blossoms in spring to snow-covered landscapes in winter.

  1. Visit Kanazawa Castle Park

Located next to Kenrokuen, Kanazawa Castle Park provides large open areas where children can stretch their legs and burn off energy. The impressive castle walls and reconstructed buildings offer plenty of opportunities to learn about Japanese history without feeling like a formal museum visit.

The park is particularly enjoyable for families looking for a relaxed afternoon outdoors.

  1. Wander Through Higashi Chaya District

Kanazawa's famous geisha district feels like stepping back in time. The preserved wooden buildings and traditional streets create a unique atmosphere that visitors of all ages enjoy.

Children often love exploring the narrow lanes and discovering hidden corners, while parents can browse local craft shops and sample traditional sweets. Early mornings are particularly pleasant before the area becomes busy.

  1. Try Local Food at Omicho Market

Known as "Kanazawa's Kitchen," Omicho Market is a fantastic place to introduce children to Japanese food. Fresh fruit, seafood, snacks, and local specialities can be found throughout the market.

Even picky eaters can usually find something they enjoy, whether it's fresh strawberries, grilled seafood, croquettes, or Japanese sweets.

  1. Enjoy a Day at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art

While art museums aren't always associated with children, Kanazawa's contemporary art museum is different. Many exhibits are interactive and visually engaging, making them accessible to younger visitors.

The museum's famous swimming pool installation is particularly popular and often becomes a highlight for families.

  1. Relax Along the Asano River

The riverside paths near Higashi Chaya District provide a peaceful escape from the city's busier areas. Families can enjoy a leisurely walk, watch birds along the river, or simply take in the scenery.

During spring, cherry blossoms transform the riverbanks into one of the city's most picturesque locations.

  1. Experience Traditional Japanese Culture

Kanazawa offers many cultural experiences that families can enjoy together. Tea ceremonies, gold leaf workshops, and traditional craft activities provide opportunities to learn about Japanese culture in a hands-on way.

Many workshops welcome children and create memorable experiences that go beyond sightseeing.

  1. Visit During the Snow Season

Winter is one of Kanazawa's most magical seasons. Snow often blankets the historic streets, gardens, and temples, creating scenes that feel straight out of a storybook.

For families travelling from warmer countries, seeing snow-covered traditional Japan can be an unforgettable experience.

Creating Lasting Memories

Family holidays pass quickly. Between exploring new places, trying new foods, and experiencing another culture, it's easy to forget to step in front of the camera together.

One of the things I love most about family photography is capturing genuine moments rather than posed portraits. Whether it's children exploring the streets of Higashi Chaya, feeding koi at Kenrokuen, or simply enjoying time together, these are the memories that families treasure long after their trip has ended.

If you're planning a visit to Kanazawa and would like to document your family's adventure, feel free to get in touch. I'd be delighted to help you create lasting memories of your time in Japan.
